Sonny Esposito, owner and Executive Chef of High on the Hog Catering and Connecticut Catering, is an Alum of the Culinary Institute of America class of 1973. However, his love of cooking started well before then. Growing up in the North End of Bridgeport, Sonny first learned the art of cuisine from the very best—his mother. An International chef in her own right, she taught him a variety of dishes from her husband’s Italian heritage to the traditional Slovak heritage of her own. It was this melding of culture’s that would lead him to his future wife and their future endeavors.
Donette Esposito was born many miles from Sonny in the great state of Oklahoma. Always a pioneer, or because her father was a salesman, she spent most of her childhood traveling across America, trying all kinds of Mid-Western and Southern cuisines, until settling in her eventual home of Connecticut. It was here that she met Sonny, fell in love, and eventually married. While a seemingly an odd couple on the surface, it would be their differences that would make them a powerful force.
In 1991, Sonny and Donette started High on the Hog Catering as a part-time venture. They set out to make a catering company that was creative, different, and combined both of their backgrounds. Together they came up with a logo that represented them both—the boot of Italy adorned with a spur—and the slogan, “International Cuisine with a Southwestern Kick.” They soon became famous for their smoked BBQ meats and sauces and went on to become Connecticut’s first professional whole pig roasters.
As their business continued to build, they opened their first reception facility, Toscano Park, in 1995. They continued to offer off-site catering, while hosting weddings, private events, corporate parties, and holiday functions in house. From there they would go on to open High on the Hog BBQ Bistro in downtown Bridgeport, all while continuing to cater.
In 2011 they would move to Milford, where they continue to thrive today.
